J’ai maintenant à cœur de vous raconter un épisode qui mit toute la famille en émoi. Nous sommes un 6 mai… Ce matin-là, dans le cabinet de travail, une femelle de Grand Paon sort de son cocon pour la plus grande joie de mon père.  Mais voilà que vers 9 h du soir, quand chacun s’apprête à se coucher, Petit Paul pousse des cris d’alerte : des papillons mâles de la même espèce ont envahi toute la maison. Combien sont-ils ? Une vingtaine environ. Ajoutons-y des égarés dans la cuisine, la chambre des enfants et autres pièces de l'habitation, et le total les accourus se rapproche de la quarantaine. Un vrai spectacle nous attend au cabinet de travail où nous nous précipitons : les insectes y bataillent en nombre autour de la cloche où mon père a cloîtré la femelle sur la table de son cabinet de travail. Comme lui, je me souviens…

Vénus de tous les points et avertis je ne sais comment, voici, en effet, quarante amoureux empressés de présenter leurs hommages à la nubile née le matin dans les mystères de mon cabinet. Pour aujourd'hui, ne troublons pas davantage l'essaim des prétendants. La flamme de la bougie compromet les visiteurs, qui s'y jettent étourdiment et s'y roussissent un peu. Demain, nous reprendrons cette étude avec un questionnaire expérimental prémédité. »

I now want to share with you an episode that had an effect on the entire family. It was May 6th… That morning, in the office, a female Great Peacock Moth hatched out of her cocoon, to my father’s delight. But then around nine in the evening when everyone was getting ready for bed, Little Paul started to shout. Male butterflies of the same species had invaded the whole house. There must have been about twenty of them. Added to that, the moths who had strayed into the kitchen, the children’s room, and the other rooms in the house, the total number was surely closer to forty. We rushed to the study where a real spectacle awaited us: countless insects were fighting around the bell jar where my father had cloistered the female on the table in his study. Like him, I remember...

“It was a memorable evening. I shall call it the Great Peacock evening.  […] Coming from every direction and apprised I know not how, here are forty lovers eager to pay their respects to the marriageable bride born that morning amid the mysteries of my study. For the moment let us disturb the swarm of wooers no further. The flame of the candle is a danger to the visitors, who fling themselves into it madly and singe their wings. We will resume the observation tomorrow with an experimental interrogatory thought out beforehand.”
