Éloignons-nous un instant de l’Harmas pour emboîter le pas de mon père dans ses expéditions. Sa passion pour la botanique débute en 1842, lors de sa première ascension du Mont Ventoux. Elle se poursuit en Corse, où il fait la connaissance du naturaliste Esprit Requiem et du botaniste Alfred Moquin-Tandon. Une rencontre importante qui l’amènera à l’entomologie. Mais la botanique n’est jamais loin et,  grâce à elle, il détermine le régime alimentaire ou les lieux de vie des insectes. Il continuera tant qu’il le peut ses expéditions, particulièrement au Mont Ventoux pour poursuivre sa collecte de plantes pour son herbier ainsi que ses dessins et aquarelles.

« Au départ, vos pieds foulent les touffes balsamiques du Thym, qui forme tapis continu sur les croupes inférieures ; dans quelques heures, ils fouleront les sombres coussinets de la Saxifrage à feuilles opposées, la première plante qui s'offre au botaniste débarquant, en juillet, sur le rivage du Spitzberg. En bas, vous avez récolté les fleurs écarlates du Grenadier, ami du ciel africain ; là-haut, vous récolterez un petit Pavot velu, qui abrite ses tiges sous une couverture de menus débris pierreux et déploie sa large corolle jaune dans les solitudes glacées du Groenland et du cap Nord, comme sur les pentes terminales du Ventoux. »

Let’s step away from the Harmas for a moment and follow in my father’s footsteps on his expeditions. His passion for botany began in 1842, when he climbed Mont Ventoux for the very first time. His passion continued in Corsica, where he met the naturalist Esprit Requien and botanist Alfred Moquin-Tandon. This decisive encounter would lead him to entomology. However, his interest in botany endured, and thanks to it, he could determine the diet or habitat of his insects. My father continued with his expeditions as long as he could, particularly to Mont Ventoux, where he collected plants for his herbarium, as well as his drawings and watercolors.

“At the start, your feet tread the scented tufts of the thyme that forms a continuous carpet on the lower slopes; in a few hours they will be treading the dark hassocks of the opposite-leaved saxifrage, the first plant to greet the botanist who lands on the coast of Spitzbergen in July. Below, in the hedges, you have picked the scarlet flowers of the pomegranate, a lover of African skies; above you will pick a shaggy little poppy, which shelters its stalks under a coverlet of tiny fragments of stone and unfolds its spreading yellow corolla as readily in the icy solitudes of Greenland and the North Cape as on the upper slopes of the Ventoux.”
